GridCraft vs Microsoft Excel

An alpha, open-source spreadsheet compared with Microsoft's spreadsheet, by product posture, file exchange and the tests to run first.

GridCraft is an open-source spreadsheet and data analysis app written in pure Rust, currently in alpha, and it is not Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Excel is Microsoft's spreadsheet, offered as a web app, as an app download and as part of Microsoft 365 plans. The useful question is which one fits the files and people you work with, and that answer depends on tests you run yourself.

Comparison at a glance

public descriptions only
Question GridCraft Microsoft Excel
Product posture Open source under MIT or Apache-2.0, in alpha. The README calls it a clean-room reimplementation of Microsoft Excel. Microsoft's spreadsheet. Its product page lists Microsoft 365 plans and a free sign-up plan, with Excel for the web.
Where it runs macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD desktop builds, plus a WebAssembly web build, according to the v0.5.0 release files. Excel for the web, an app download and a mobile download, according to the product page. This table did not check the platform list for each plan.
File exchange XLSX is the native format, with CSV and TSV too. The README says styles, formulas, tables, charts and PivotTables round-trip. The roadmap lists XLSX fidelity on real-world files as an open gap. The compatibility target named in ROADMAP.md. Open GridCraft's saved copy in Excel and check for repair prompts, since the roadmap says no one has confirmed that across a real corpus.
Automation An MCP server, a command-line tool and a JSON control channel, as the README describes. The product page describes Copilot features in Excel. This table did not check scripting or add-in options.
Best first test A copy of one real workbook, saved as XLSX, reopened in GridCraft and compared cell by cell. The workbook your team already uses, to see which features must match.

Evidence and method

Sources: we read the ArtCraft product page for GridCraft, the repository README, ROADMAP.md and the v0.5.0 release page on 2026-10-16. For Excel we read Microsoft's public product page on the same date. Limits: we did not open an Excel file in GridCraft or in Excel, and we did not run either program for this page. Statements about GridCraft's file support come from its own documents, not from our tests.

What to verify

  1. Open a copy of one real workbook in GridCraft, then save it back as XLSX. Note formulas, number formats, charts and PivotTables before and after.
  2. Reopen the saved file in Excel and check for a repair prompt. The roadmap says no one has confirmed this across a real corpus.
  3. If your files are legacy .xls, test that path on its own. The README says .xls opens; the v0.5.0 release notes do not mention it.
  4. Check plan, platform and licence details on Microsoft's page before you budget for either tool.

Questions readers ask

Is GridCraft a replacement for Microsoft Excel?

Not yet, by the project's own account. The roadmap calls GridCraft alpha and lists gaps in file fidelity, large workbooks and other areas. Whether it fits your work depends on your files, so test them.

Are these results from a benchmark?

No. This page compares public product descriptions and the project's own documents. It has no speed tests and no compatibility tests.

Which one should I pick?

This page names no winner. Pick by file, team and risk. If a workbook must open unchanged in Excel, test that round trip first. If you want to script the app, read the README's automation section and try it on a copy.

What this page does not claim

It does not rank the two products, publish prices, quote Excel version numbers or user counts, or claim that any GridCraft release opens a given Excel file. It does not imply that a mention on this fan-made site is an endorsement by Microsoft, ArtCraft or storytold.
